Study on feasibility of mammotome system in the treatment of bigger benign breast tumor

Abstract:

Objective

To explore an expanding function beyond the normal capability of the mammotome system (MMT), that is the practicability of using the MMT with 2.5 cm-caliber in fanshape rotary cutting mode to resect benign tumor of 3—6 cm in diameter.

Methods

The study group consisted of 200 patients with tumor of 3-6 cm in diameter, who received treatment of MMT fan-shape rotary cutting method.The control group consisted of 200 patients with tumor ≤2.5 cm and received routine MMT operation.The therapeutic effects of the two groups were compared.Chi-sqare test was used.

Results

A 100% successive rate of operation was obtained.The average time for resecting tumors was 20 minutes and the average of cutting times was 50.There was no statistical difference in intraoperative bleeding, skin ecchymosis and postoperative hematomas between the two groups (χ2 =0.1329, P=0.715; χ2 =0.0502, P=0.823;χ2 =0.0000, P=0.995).The hospitalization duration, the operation scar and other complications were similar between the two groups.

Conclusions

The MMT fan-shape rotary cutting method can be used to resect 3 - 6 cm benign breast tumors.It has the advantages of safety, accuracy, efficiency, minimal invasiveness, covert incision, good cosmetic effect and low complications.
