Effect of radix astragali taohong decoction on cellular immune function in breast cancer patients with postoperative chemotherapy

Abstract:

Objective

To observe the effect of radix astragali taohong decoction on cell ular i mmune f unction in breast cancer patients with postoperative chemotherapy.

Methods

Eighty breast cancer patients who had received operation were rando mly divided into t wo groups:a t herapy gr oup(n=40)treated wit h epir ubicin pl us fl uor ouracil(CEF)pl us radix astragali taohong decoction,and a contr ol gr oup(n=40)treated with CEF only.The t wo gr oups bot h received 6 cycles of therapy.The T l y mphocyte subsets such as CD3+,CD4+,CD8+,CD4+/CD8+,as well as nat ural killer(NK)cells were detected bef ore and after therapy in bot h gr oups.Paired t test,Mann-Whitney test and t test were applied f or co mparison of the cell i mmune f unction bet ween t he t wo gr oups.

Results

No significant difference in CD3+,CD4+,CD8+,CD4+/CD8+and NK cells was f ound bef ore therapy bet ween t he t wo gr oups(P>0.05).After therapy,CD3+ cell and CD4+/CD8+ cell in the therapy group were higher than in the control group(Z=-4.18 P=0.00,Z=-2.14 P=0.03).The difference in CD4+,CD8+,and NK cell bet ween pre-therapy and post-therapy was not statistically significant bet ween the t wo groups(P>0.05).In the therapy group CD3+ was significantl y higher in post-t herapy t han in pre-t herapy(t=5.48 ,P=0.00).The other indexs were not statistically different bet ween pre and post-therapy(P>0.05).All indexes in t he contr ol gr oup had no statistical diff erence bet ween preand post-therapy(P>0.05).

Conclusion

Radix astragali taohong decoction can i mprove the cellular i mmune f unction of patients with breast cancer,f or it increases CD3+(T-ly mphocytes)and CD4+/CD8+significantly,thus,motivating the body organis ms to raise the ability of resistance to t u mor.
