Influences of different operation modes on the quality of life and quality of marital life of postopera-tive patients with breast cancer

Objective

To assess the influence of different operation modes on the quality of life and the quality of marital life in women with breast cancer who have undergone a mastectomy.

Methods

149 women aged ﹤60 years one year after mastectomy were included in the study.FACT-B（Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy'Breast Quality of Life Instrument） and Olson's ENRICH questionnaire were used to assess the quality of life and quality of marital life.

Results

The study showed that women treated with Halsted radical mastectomy had a lower quality of life than those with modified radical mastectomy and breast conservative surgery （ P﹤0.05）， and there was no significant difference between modified radical mastectomy and breast conservative surgery（ P﹥0.05）.Quality of marital life was increased with diminution of operation extent （ P﹤0.05）， but the score of quality of marital life was still lower than that of the norm.

Conclusions

Patients'marital life and quality of life can be influenced after mastectomy.Quality of life of the women with modified radical mastectomy is higher than with Halsted radical mastectomy，and breast conservative surgery helps to improve quality of life.
