Abstract:

Objective

To explore the way of improving cosmetic outcome after breast-conserving surgery.

Methods

From January 2006 to October 2007,12 female patients with primary breast cancer aged 34-55 years(median 39 years)underwent extended local excision and immediate breast reconstruction with latissimus dorsi flap(LDF).Tumour characteristics, breast specimen weigh, clearance margin, cosmetic outcome and postoperative complications were assessed.

Results

The weight of the specimens ranged 110-215 g(median 150 g),and the clearance margin ranged 1-2 cm(median 1.5 cm).The cosmetic outcome was excellent in three cases, good in six, fair in three, and no poor result was found.Satisfactory cosmetic result was achieved in all patients. There were no serious postoperative complications.

Conclusions

Immediate LDF breast reconstruction is a good method of correcting deformity of the breast after breast-conservation surgery and can improve the cosmetic outcome.
