Abstract:

Objective

To study the short-term therapeutic effect of breast conserving surgery for patients with early stage breast cancer.

Methods

The survival rate, recurrence and shape were retrospectively analyzed in 105 patients with breast cancer who received breast conserving surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy from January,2001 to December,2005.

Results

The 105 patients with breast cancer received breast conserving surgery, followed by radiotherapy. All the patients were followed up for a median period of 24 months(15-86 months)and the average of 37.4 months.Forty-seven cases were followed up over 3 years. The 3-year overall survival rate was 100%,and disease free survival rate was 95.7%,2 cases experienced local relapse. The ave-rage interval between operation and relapse was 21 months.Distant bone metastases were found in 2 cases. The median interval between operation and metastasis was 18 months. The cosmetic results of 85 patients were evaluated as good 47.1%,fair 50.6%,and poor 2.6%.

Conclusions

For early breast cancer patients, breast conserving surgery followed by radiotherapy can obtain excellent local control and good cosmetic results.
